Tips to select properly a breaker

Hydraulic breakers are one of the most used attachments in breaking and demolition tasks, however, this equipment is one of the most misunderstood by its owners, which results in poor performance choices, precarious lifetime, and damage to the carrier vehicle.

If you want to purchase a hydraulic breaker and you don’t know how to select it, you should pay attention at least to the following information and that you can acquire in the technical sheet of your machine:

-Weight of the vehicle carrier. -Hydraulic flow. -Hydraulic pressure.

Once this information is collected, the following points will be the first filter for the proper selection of a beaker:

-Make sure your machine has a kit for a hydraulic breaker, that is, the components that allow you to fit that attachment to the vehicle, such as control valves, hoses, pressure lines, etc.

-If your equipment has a kit installed, check the data of the previously used hydraulic breaker such as brand, model, minimum operating pressure, minimum carrier weight, etc.

-Check the specs of your vehicle as its total weight without an attachment, model, brand, compatibility, or adaptation matrix with hydraulic breakers of the same manufacturer, pressures, hydraulic flows, etc.

-Calculate the average usage time that the breaker will work.

-Define the type of material that the hammer will break, as well as its nature.

The information collected in the points mentioned will define the selection of the hammer based on the characteristics of your machine and its subsequent application, approaching a real panorama. The following points are to maximize the compatibility between the attachment and the machine to obtain a better selection.

Second filter for a correct selection

1.-Each breaker has requirements associated with the flow and hydraulic pressures for proper operation, you need to confirm if they are compatible with the carrier. Breakers with a slow flow will operate slowly and unproductively, and those with excess flow and pressure will overheat, leading to failures on your vehicle and breaker. Eliminate all those options that are outside the pressure and flow values of your machine.

2.-Some machines that usually meet the hydraulic pressure and flow requirements require modifications to the counterweight to perform their tasks optimally. Check with the manufacturer of your equipment if you must carry out this, in case you want to purchase a breaker especially on small vehicles such as mini excavators.

3.-If you decide to purchase a breaker of the same brand as your vehicle, check with the manufacturer the adaptation and performance tables depending on the activity you will be performing. On the other hand, if the hammer belongs to another supplier, consider the minimum and maximum weight that the carrier requires, as well as its minimum operating pressure, comparing said data with your machine.

4.- If the purpose of a breaker is the rupture of material, and there are more than two models that are attached to your machine, choose the largest one.

5.- Different purposes require modifications to the breakers or the machine as use underwater or in tunnels, make sure to make the relevant changes for greater operator safety and equipment lifetime.
